Bad Call

Stressful money situation at the house at the moment. We'll get by but it's hard on everyone.

Currently reading Sold Down The River by Barbara Hambly and enjoying it like I have all the others in the series so far. There is no place quite like New Orleans. I have to admit, I like reading about New Orleans. Past, present and future. She has a strange attraction to me.

So, book based in historical New Orleans from the perspective of free man Benjamin January. Mysteries. I like the characters or hate them, depending on the storyline. His mother drives me right up the wall, I may not like her but I can understand her to an extent. Voodoo queen Marie Laveau makes appearances but she always ties into the story, never gratuitous. Detective Shaw is a great character with depth, although first appearances are deceiving. So, like history and mystery? I'd totally recommend this series.

The first book in the series is A Free Man of Color. I've been picking these up where I can find them but since my local Borders stores have closed, I received this last one through Paperback Swap.

T.V.

The weather has been so nice the past couple of days. Typical, northwest pacific kind of weather. Grey, bits of sun, little rain, 70 degrees. I love this. Everyone is getting along for the moment, which is also nice. I wish I could get enough sleep, but that hasn't happened yet. Not really sure why, but my "oh god, get UP!" body alarm goes off early in the morning and I can't get back to sleep until late at night. So tired.

The car got a bath day before yesterday, and the next day it rained. Of course. :) But I'm happy because the car looks nice. So tomorrow I will clean out the inside again and wipe the dash and such down. As long as it isn't raining. I hate getting the car all wet inside just to clean it out. And there will be reading. And laundry.

Cats

I am so excited! I went and got the mail this morning and I've won a copy of Laura Joh Rowland's The Ronin's Mistress. Yay! I really like the Sano Ichiro mystery series and I cannot wait to dig into the newest book. And it is signed! OMG.

Totally made my day.

The Fruit

At least the house is a tolerable temperature tonight. I hope it continues like this for the rest of the summer. If it wants to be hot during the day, I can live with it (unhappily) as long as it cools off at night. The paycheck arrived and we celebrated by eating out instead of heating up the house.

So tired today, DH's alarm didn't go off so there was a bit of a run around this morning getting him out the door. I'm not a fan of getting up that early so I think I did the sleepwalk-around-to-help thing. I know I helped but I don't remember much. And then I went back to bed.

Which I'm going to do again. I feel it coming on like a wet cement bag to the head.

Raise Four

Worked hard today. I suffer through a corporation's wanting-to-save-money shenanigans. It was so hot in the stores that the sweat was running out the end of my braided hair. Disgusting. The stores are just barely to not really comfortable for customers, much less anyone who has to do any actual work in them. Just the employee B.O. from sweating it out in the back room doing freight could knock out a horse. Blerch.

Not to mention that it has been yucky hot all day with added humidity from the little rainstorm this morning. There are currently five fans in my house going at top speed, hoping to suck in some cooler air from outside now that the sun is down. I am miserable. It is a three shower kind of day.

And holy penguin feathers! There was an earthquake in Virginia today. Thankfully, not huge and no reports of injuries so that's good. But it was big enough to get noticed (5.8) which is unusual. People felt it in New York and Ohio and if you hunt around on the web (try Phil Plait's blog on Discovery I believe) there's this neat depiction of the seismic waves traveling across the United States.

Nerd fest over,

So To Speak

I detest having the hiccups. Just as I starting typing, they struck. Hard. I have actually had the hiccups so badly that I've passed out. I grant you that it's a cure but not one that I would recommend.

I've got the fan blowing in my direction since the weather hasn't been playing nice and the landlord doesn't believe in fixing the a/c. I'd just pop the window air conditioner in but those aren't allowed. (And I've got two of those beasts in the garage, just languishing away.) I should turn off the receiver that I just noticed was on. That sucker puts out a whole lotta heat. --- Done.

Just finished a book (ehh, not my cup of tea) and started another. I've done the laundry, surfed the internet and made The Man's lunch. I should probably do something else but nothing much else appeals to me. I exercised this morning and I'd have to say that's my big virtuous whoop-de-whoop today. I'll be running all over my particular area of the planet tomorrow so lazy bastard it is tonight.

It seems like I should have some sort of sign-off line or something here but I can't think of anything. Maybe later.
